Blackboard night 1 review

I know we're in the midst of the Kagiheya and Mikeneko heat...but I think Blackboard deserves some appreciation. Getting it out of my system while it's still fresh in my mind (and guh, I don't think I can think of anything else for the rest of the night tbh).

I don't have an explanation for the rating (11.0%), though I saw many comments even among fans that it's such a sensitive topic that they didn't want to watch. Could the scandal have pulled some tricks? I don't know. There were also many fans in Japan who weren't able to watch realtime but recorded it. But rating isn't exactly reflective of quality.

What matters is that, it really was a solid and touching drama, and Sho performed so well. AND GOSH DID I BAWL MY EYES OUT IN THE SECOND HALF. T_____T (yes, that part.)

Tbh when it was first announced, it's such an emotional and realistic storyline that I was also worried for Sho's performance. None of his past works come even close to this degree of realism. And I mean transitioning from Nazodi to this? It's a whole 180-turn within a week.

But he did unexpectedly well. Yeah, a few parts where I thought his gestures or facial expressions could've been more subtle. But overall, I'm not too bothered. There were so many times where you'd just want to tell Shouhei that everything will be okay. The emotions. All the anger. The tears. Especially that part. I mean, we've seen him cry before in dramas (like TQS2), but although touched, I don't think his performance had me empathizing and crying with his character before. Not even KamiKaru, which I own and super adore. But this time for Blackboard, I didn't just watch him break down. I felt it.

All the supporting casts were also great, especially his students. Although I'm not a akb fan, Yuko left a good impression for me. I cannot help but recognized Masaki Suda ever since my friends showed me Kamen Rider W *laughs* And guh, Nakamura Aoi, you hunk. But you don't look 17 lol

The story had a controlled pacing. With each storybeat, Shouhei's values continue to be stripped apart by the social changes, like how yamato nadeshiko no longer exist for the sake of survival. I can totally see how he would be so heartbroken, struggling internally, to not know what to teach anymore as if he's no longer needed...cuz Shouhei really loved to teach and serve an important role for others. The flashback war scenes were brief but just enough. The ending left me touched yet empty ;_; so young...But so cool how it's linked up to Night 2's episode.

Amazing how many looks Sho has undergone for this role....crew-cut, Jesus hobo-look, the 1940 look. Though, I think few minor areas they could've improved in was hiding the right arm better, and perhaps giving him some more battle scars. I mean,cuz Sho naturally have really fair skin, he looked so unmarred and even angelic to some point. That isn't exactly what I'd think of for someone who returned from a war *lol* But, that may have been a characteristic that made him look fragile. Tho he seriously didn't look 10 years older than his students 8D

And okay. Don't hit me, but there were some parts I can't help but see it in a 腐 way *hides* I mean, ya know, Takefumi's hatred toward his sensei was so passionate. And uh, all the Shouhei shoved around by the many solders and all ←

Anyways...reading Sho's CUT interview, and his prior commentary, it's obvious how deep and how much this role means to him. How his first TBS role was a student, and at the age of 30, he's able to do the role of a teacher. It's very symbolic.

Blackboard can take my money for DVD already. Yesssssss.

I really can't deal watching anything war-related drama or movie. Not this or Iwo Jima. ;-;
Apr. 7th, 2012 08:50 pm (UTC)
It's a very sensitive subject, and I know not everyone would want to pick it up. (like if there's a movie about the war w/ Iraq or or 9/11, I'd also give a second thought)

But this really was a good drama, less of the war, and more about the after-affects of the war...and guh ;-; Do give it a try!

Let's watch it altogether. ^^

Okee~! Btw the school principal in the drama said "his son in the battle of Iwo Jima", and I couldn't help but think of Nino LOL

I thought of this too snickered in the middle of translating because of that thought

Thank you for the review. I do want to read what other things... as I think the drama went a bit unappreciated around lj... Probably the issue... but it so deserves a try. It's a really touching drama and Sho's perfomance was really good! I am proud of his work there...

Kind of agree with you with the hiding of the arm and all that... if a bomb was what left him like that... some marks on that side of his body would have been reasonable... but you know JE... I am surprised they allowed him to play the part of an one-armed teacher to begin with (you know they HAVE to look pretty all the time... )

Again, thank you for posting your thoughts... Yep, my money goes to the dvd too ;)

I also think that it was kinda brushed aside on LJ... Even within the fandom alone, quite a few expressed little interest because it's so serious. With so much buzz going on with regards to upcoming Arashi activities, maybe this was simply looked at as "another Sho work" of the many activities he's had since last August.

But I can say with confidence this was Sho's acting at best, and overall so well produced ♥ Blackboard left such a great impression in my mind. Even if this may sound biased, I'd even argue this is a role only Sho could've pulled off, cuz he really genuinely love teaching kids, he is mature enough, and yet he carries that delicate balance of strength and fragility so well.

(you know they HAVE to look pretty all the time... )

HAHA that is so true. Fans do so love eye-candies after all. I still remember how his hair was such a buzz, but I got so used to the look that nothing felt out of place by the time I watched. I'm glad Sho was given the opportunity to widen his breath of work and proved his abilities.

I haven't seen a link at CDJ or YesAsia yet, but the DVD box is up on Amazon for 26% off! ^^ http://www.amazon.co.jp/gp/product/B007P1E288/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=AN1VRQENFRJN5

I hope CDJ and YA have it soon... but the release date is September?! that is too long *pout* but well time flies anyway ;)

It seems Amazon keeps the same offer this other site has: http://shop.tsutaya.co.jp/dvd/news/details.html?ko=peadbl12&news_id=3874

I wonder if at least CDJ keeps an offer like that... so I don't end poor as a rat... ;)

Agree with you that this part was so amazing because Sho made it real. And yes, this was probably his best acting, although that SP he made where he was a student was pretty good too (he is good in dramatic roles!) I still love Kageyama too, but if I had to choose just one of his acting roles, just one, probably would be this one in Blackboard.

He invested too much in it, for the drama to go unnoticed, I think. It really deserves more attention... Now I hope he is eating big big steaks and ramen bowls... because the poor thing needed them ;)

Hmm I don't know about CDJ. Even with Nazodi DVD Box, CDJ only offered 10% off at most, whereas Amazon offered 27%. In this case, I feel like Amazon might be a better deal since they have a flat EMS rate (and the cost's equivalent to CDJ's Airmail more or less). Given the price, I'm even contemplating to post out if anyone else is planning to buy and if combining items can somehow save a little on cost. But it's a premature thought since there's still 5 months in the waiting ^^;

Grr, I've already decided to buy Nazodi SP dvd too...hoho, wallet cries. Kageyama is a fun character and fun role, though probably it didn't challenge Sho much as an actor. But comedy obviously doesn't carry the same weight as realism. I also agree if I had to nominate a role of his, it'd be Shouhei.

I'm glad he looked a little fleshier during the Blackboard promos ♥

Puffing cheeks doesn't count I guess ;)

Lovely puffing cheeks they are lol! Yes, he looked better in the promotion. I remember I thought the poor thing would arrive to his house and just go straight to bed after all the shows he appeared in... what a busy day he had on Thursday!

So Nazodi is cheaper in Amazon.. hmmm... in that case I may have a chance... It's so expensive to get a Japanese drama... I am still figuring out if I can afford it. I am planning on selling some magazines shortly.

The Nazodi SP was cute and yes I will like to own it too... My problem is that my fav are Sho and Jun or Jun and Sho as you prefer it... and that means pocket/wallet totally empty lol!
Apr. 9th, 2012 01:57 am (UTC)
Yeah actually another fan was saying how lately it seemed like he's not as happy, which I read as fatigue cuz he's just had work nonstop. I kinda felt it too when I was watching the HnA SP with Aiba and Nao.

What an expensive hobby we dealt in, especially when biases are involved ;P Yeah... I don't think I can afford the Nazodi set (despite being such a big advocate of it!), so I am compromising with the SP dvd at the very least.

Btw! Rating for night 2 and 3 are out: 11.3% and 9.1% respectively. I'm not sure how to feel about the numbers since the SP overall is so profound... But biased me is relief anti's can't use Night 1's rating against Sho now. There were some nasty anti's = =;

RLY?! Wow, that's totally awesome! ♥ I suppose it isn't hard to distinguish out with all the undying Sho love everywhere on the journal XD よろしく! So happy more Blackboard lovers!! Thank you again for translating that 2-hr monster 8D
Apr. 20th, 2012 08:25 pm (UTC)

I dunno! Honestly though I never checked your journal. I would only see your username but not click through. But when we interacted there I was like asdfjkl; IDK I feel this is asaphira_sachi BUT WHAT THE HELL WHY DID THAT SPECIFIC USERNAME POP OUT?

...yes my psychic powers are creeping me out now D:

anyway! asdfgjkl; MY WORDS. YES IT WAS A 2HR MONSTER. D8 1300 LINES! JUST. asfdkl; But ohgooood so worth it, so worth it. So worth doing it for Sho because it is his best.

I also kind of realized a few hours after posting subs that it was the first major contribution I made to the fandom for him. I never really did translate anything for the Arashi fandom, my first JE fandom, but I already worked as a spot translator for JUMP-in Fansubs, a HSJ fansub team.

Guess it was an unconscious guilty feeling that prompted me to translate without second thoughts... That I haven't done anything for Sho yet he was the one I loved the longest. D:

No regrets. ♥

Wow that's some SUPER SIXTH-SENSE. Thank you!! But shoot, that means I'm failing as a troll.

I AGREE! It really was Sho at his best. For previous dramas, it's always been "WHEE IT'S SHO AS " and of course it's hard not to be critical of his acting (that's a whole other topic on its own). But for Blackboard, There's this delicate line between him and Shohei.

I just totally felt that rather than "acting" as Shohei, he really "became" Shohei as if he's really living the era. I thought, if Sho was born in that era, he really would be someone like Shohei. After watching it, actually it was so surreal to switch back to the Arashi him.

It's a wonderful contributions :DDD! ♥ Thank you~ The most I've done is just magazine translations, haha... And so weird arashi_on didn't approve D: Usually they'd send a message why it wasn't approve?
Apr. 21st, 2012 03:22 am (UTC)

Wait what if you are a troll but I consider myself a troll what am I D: Half a magical person? D:

LOL AGREE SO HARD. Hmm. It's because for his past roles, there would always be bits and pieces of the real Sho that we know that would randomly pepper his roles XD Like Kageyama, it was a perfectly Sho role... In Blackboard, instead, I really found myself calling him Shohei.

Yep, machigai nai deshou ne? If he was in that era, there is no doubt that he would be someone like Shohei -- a very patriotic person at first (during wartime), but having survived the war and seen the horrors of war, someone who would be desperate to see friends/family/colleagues alive after a war, and someone who will be mortified to realize that the very values he advocated for and shared with them were what brought them to their destruction.

Well, I'm kinda used to seeing him in stuff like that in my dreams omg sob so seeing him back to Arashi mode was pretty easy xD

I'm glad you think so :'D Hihihi~ I dunno. I'm a generally really lazy person. I guess the Sho!wife in me was just like, askldfjljh U NO HAVE BIRTHDAY GIFT FOR THY HUBBY YET D:

Really? I also found it weird D: :( I didn't even get a message D: /wrist
Apr. 21st, 2012 05:41 am (UTC)
You're a magical (song) troll 8D

Yeah I agree... his previous roles always had bits of "Sho" in them in terms of personalities. Kageyama was totally seeing Sho as a "manga character", which seem to be many of his past drama roles XD Like Mimura, Tamura, Yatterman, I'm not sure if Kamiyama counts xD

But in Blackboard's case, it wasn't personality but Sho's "heart" that was put into the character of Shohei (ignore that it sounds cheezy). Like, his love for kids, his passion for sharing his knowledge to others, the Showa strong-will, and also a face that people would feel compassion for.

in my dreams omg sob

Admittedly the nightmare part was truly fantasy materializing in drama form indeed... 8D; And he just cried so beautifully... But when he had his hair swiped back in the Zero that followed, I was like "Shohei reincarnation!? ;_;"

Try submitting again D: Maybe the mod missed it or something.
Apr. 21st, 2012 05:57 am (UTC)

asdhafkl so many feelings for Blackboard. Hell. Wouldn't even mind marrying Shohei ;_;

Kamiyama is... a depressed and empty!Sho. It's still Sho. XD

The nightmare hm >D I love his tears here... They weren't awkward D: /gets shot

I resubmitted twice cuz I missed sth in the first post... Neither was approved D:
Apr. 20th, 2012 08:39 pm (UTC)

EDIT: asdfjkl; I spam too much lololol but asdfhjkl;

YAMA PAIR BLACKBOARD-INSPIRED FIC 8DDDDD YES you are awesome to have requested that. /goes to read

That reminds me! I don't know if you're interested, but a Japanese fan actually wrote a JS fic based on Blackboard. I'll PM it since I don't think she wants it public. Am I the only one who's guilty of seeing slashy bits while watching BB tho?
Apr. 21st, 2012 03:12 am (UTC)
I AM ALIVE BOHAHAHAHA Woke up at exactly 10am some amazing body clock but neighbor's internet was off D:

no that is fine, my yaoi senses were also tingling roflmao

DIS IS BYUTIPUL. ZOMG. /itching to translate

wait that would be more abuse for my braincells

I kind of want to see Shirahama x Naruse crossover AU... or Shirahama x Enomoto Kei (even tho it's still too early to know Kei's personality, but I almost have a complete reading sadfj;l I like watching and observing people too much)

Wasn't it ;_; And so tragic too... the ending... Shirahama is such a delicate character to work with tho cuz of the very contained storyline. But hurr count on Japanese fans to come up with stuff so quickly.

Going off BB a bit, but I definitely hope there will be a fic with the mystery geeks altogether xD Namely, Kageyama, Kei, Shuntaro, Yoshitaro...

AND YOU ARE GOD. Please let me know if you'd like any help~~ GANBA!

Hi, this is me being a creeper and randomly leaving random people massages :D sorry about this..but I'm in the Yama pair community and I was just randomly clicking on people's Lj and ended up here. But that aside.. but I must tell you that I LOVE this drama too. LOVE.LOVE.

I watched it, then went to do my chores like ironing and stuff and suddenly I just cried while ironing because I got this drama stuck in my head. I-I..CRIED. WHILE IRONING.

With all that said, I love it. And I'm so glad to stumble over an entry like this, because this drama just deserve all the love, it really does.

May. 9th, 2012 08:11 am (UTC)
OMG sorry I didn't reply earlier! LJ notification wankers lol.

CRYING WHILE IRONING. That is awesome. The feelings and the sentiments just stay with you so much, right? Gosh ME TOO! I had the drama stuck in my head for practically weeks, and even now (given all the lovely Sho forehead glory) I'm constantly seeing a shadow of Shohei while looking at Sho. Same person, yet completely different. He was just really one of those characters that you want to, with all your might, tell him everything's gonna be alright... Sho really did a tremendous, memorable job on the role as Shohei.

Thank you sooo much for sharing your thoughts with me! I'm really glad to hear from others (and Yama fan at that! :'D) who enjoyed it, cuz it was definitely more than "just another Sho drama"..
